A house does not become unmanageable overnight. It happens by inches — a basket of laundry that never gets folded, a bathroom that stops being cleaned properly, a hallway that slowly fills with things nobody can lift any more.

By the time family visits and sees it clearly, it has usually been that way a while.

This is a safety job as much as a tidiness one

Falls are the thing that ends independent living, and most of them happen at home over something ordinary — a rug that slides, a cord across a doorway, a box left in a hallway, a wet bathroom floor.

Keeping the walking routes clear and the bathroom dry is not housekeeping for appearances. It is the cheapest fall prevention there is.

What light housekeeping covers

• Kitchen — dishes, counters, sink, fridge kept clear of what should not be in it
• Bathroom — cleaned properly, floor kept dry, grab routes clear
• Floors — vacuuming and mopping the rooms actually in use
• Laundry — washed, dried, folded and put away where they can reach it
• Bed linen changed
• Bins out, mail brought in and opened, papers dealt with
• Walkways kept clear of trip hazards

What it is not: deep cleaning, moving heavy furniture, ladders, windows, or clearing out a garage. That is a job for a cleaning company, and we will say so rather than have a caregiver up a stepladder.

Their house, their rules

Somebody coming into your home and moving your things is not a small thing when your home is most of what you still control.

So we ask before we move anything, we put things back where they live, and we do not throw things away on our own judgement. If a pile of newspapers matters to them, it stays. The aim is a home that is safe and comfortable to live in — not one reorganised to somebody else’s standard.

Arranging it

Housekeeping and laundry are part of homemaker and companion service, usually combined with meal preparation and the weekly shop. Minimum 15 hours per week, and we will tell you honestly at the assessment if what you actually need is a cleaning service instead.
