Caring for a parent or a spouse at home is not a job you clock out of. There is no shift change, no weekend, and very little sympathy for the day you cannot face it.

Respite care is simply this: someone competent takes over for a while so you can stop. An afternoon, a weekend, a fortnight.

You are allowed to be tired

Most of the family caregivers who call us open with an apology. They explain that they are managing fine, that they only need a little help, that they feel guilty for asking.

You can love someone completely and still be running on empty. Those two things have never been in conflict. The people who burn out are not the ones who cared less — they are the ones who never once put the load down.

What respite looks like in practice

• A regular afternoon — a standing block each week that is yours. The appointment you keep putting off, the friend you have not seen, or nothing at all.
• Weekend cover — so you can travel to a wedding, a graduation, or your own bed for two nights.
• Extended coverage — a week or two while you take an actual holiday.
• Short notice — when something comes up and there is nobody else.

While we are there: meals cooked, house kept, company kept, appointments driven to. Your routine continues rather than pausing.

Getting them comfortable first

The fear most families have is that a stranger appears the day you leave. So we do not do it that way.

The caregiver meets your loved one beforehand, usually across a couple of shorter visits while you are still in the house. By the time you actually go, they are a familiar face rather than a substitute. That handover is most of the difference between respite that works and respite that everybody dreads.

You will get a call or a message while you are away if you want one, and no news genuinely means no news.
